Interview: Andrea Acevedo MUA In Venezuela and CDMX

Andy Acevedo talented makeup artist and colorist. I had the opportunity to meet each other around 2018, when I recently moved to Mexico City. I remember that a photographer friend named Joshua Casillas He contacted me to take some editorial photos together with another model called Lupe Blazquez. At that time I was starting my modeling career and I was very happy to meet such kind and brilliant people in their work. I was impressed to see how detailed and perfectionist Andrea was with makeup, but she was also quick. Both makeups were spectacular and our skin looked flawless. After that occasion I worked with Andy once again for a video blog where she explained the makeup process. It was my birthday and she left me dazzling.

How did you start in the world of fashion?

I started in 2018 just when a friend who is a Stylist contacted me asking me to do makeup for a model for some fashion photos that were going to be taken. The photographer was the one who put this project together, his intention was to send these photos to a magazine, but you know how the medium is, we had to wait for them to answer us if the photos were going to be published or not. I like to tell this story because right after we did this work the photos were published and that was the bridge for us to continue working together and use this portfolio to work with other photographers and stylists who continued to contact me. From then on the recommendation was word of mouth and to this day that is what I have done.

How many years ago did you start your MUA career?

I started in 2017 in Venezuela just doing makeup for my friends and acquaintances, some of my mom's clients in her beauty salon, but you can say that I didn't take it as a career because I did it in my free time.
I started my makeup career as such in 2018 as well, it all happened this year, which was when I came to live in Mexico.

Did you study in Venezuela for MUA?

No, right there I studied a university degree that had nothing to do with makeup. It was called Bioanalysis, here in Mexico (Biochemist biologist parasitologist) omg I needed to tell this because I don't know what I was thinking. I studied makeup here in Mexico City at Seicento Makeup School.

Besides friends and family, what do you miss about Venezuela?

Wow, it's a difficult question, I think I just miss what Venezuela was and what it had.

What is it like to work in Mexico?

Working in Mexico or any other country as an immigrant at first is not easy, wow! It is starting from scratch, it is practically a rebirth. In a sense, no one knows you and that means you have to work twice as hard and put in twice as much effort, and if I talk about Mexico, I feel that it is a country with many opportunities. If you want to, I'm sure you can do it.

What do you like most about Mexico?

Ugh what can I tell you. Mexico for me is my second country. I LOVE many things about Mexico, starting with how friendly the people are here, I can say that I have been lucky to find incredible Mexican friends, I madly love the general culture of the country, the food fascinates me. Right now I am giving myself the opportunity to get to know all of Mexico, and to express that on instagram and Youtube channel about trips I take with my husband. Every time I go to a new state or a new magical town, I don't miss the opportunity to try the typical dish of that area and get acquainted.

What do you not like so much about working in Mexico?

I'm going to talk about the medium of makeup, fashion, recordings, etc. I have had to come across people who do not value your work, and sometimes they do not want to pay you what it is really worth or in the case of some production companies they want to pay you up to 6 months or more for your work or in magazines that only want you to work for collaboration and then They don't even give you the material you "worked for", I don't understand those policies here and I don't agree.
I clarify, not everyone works like this but that is what I don't like about working in Mexico in this environment.

Who is the MUA that you admire?

I have three and I can't decide on one. These three people that I will mention have contributed a lot to my knowledge in my career and thanks to the fact that I have
I have had the opportunity to learn from them. Are Danessa Myricks, Patrick TA and James Molloy.

What is your specialty? (for example eyeliner, skins, etc.)

I do all styles of makeup but my specialty in makeup is Editorial Beauty, which I just obtained when I studied makeup and taking courses with the top makeup artists that I mentioned above.

What brand would you like to work with? Is there a famous singer-artist it would be your dream to work with?

The truth is, I don't have any specific person with whom I have a dream of doing makeup, but rather a moment or the experience of working for one of the most important makeup artists in the industry, which is Pat McGrath or be part of the team for one of the industry's important shows, perhaps at Fashion Week in NY or Milan. THAT IS WHAT I WANT.

What has been your favorite job?

My favorite job was when I worked for the first time for an interactive series “SWIPE NIGHT” on Tinder, just because this job defined a before and after in my career as a makeup artist. Here I learned a lot and grew as a professional.

What has been your least favorite job?

My least favorite job was when I was working on something else and not as a makeup artist.

If you could choose a place to work, where would it be?

I would like to work in Milan Paris.

If you weren't MUA, what would be your other option?

This question is very difficult because I don't see myself doing anything else. Maybe I would just be doing hair color, which by the way I already do too.

What is something we all need to have in our makeup bag?

If you are a minimalist with your makeup bag like me, just a BB CREAM, a cream blush or lipstick that you can use as a blush shadow and lipstick at the same time, a colored gel for the eyebrows, a curler and mascara. These will help you solve daily makeup. If you want a plus in your makeup you can add an eyeliner, a shadow duo and a highlighter.

Something that can never be missing in your makeup box?

For me, lipstick can never be missing in my makeup box.

I already have my dream job.

What do you like more, editorial, Social or TV?

UFF I really like all three because in each one you live different experiences and I love that but if I have to choose ONE it would be editorial because here I can express my creativity to the fullest.

Do you also work with hair?

Yessss. In fact, I decided to combine these two things in the beauty industry that I like. Currently I am also a colorist.
