Sometimes it is important to get away from the routine with your partner and spend some quality time together. We are very lucky because Mexico is known for having beautiful beaches and magical villages where we can easily escape. If you want to forget about work, the noise of the city or your children for a few days, I recommend these hotels for a perfect romantic getaway.
5. Viceroy, Riviera Maya

This past February 14th we visited the Viceroy in the Riviera Maya for our Valentine's Day and I am very happy with our decision because it is a beautiful adults-only resort tucked away in the rainforest. I loved that the resort only has 41 villas, so everything felt very cozy and all the amenities were within walking distance. All villas have a huge private pool, which can be heated to a temperature you like best. The two beachside restaurants are excellent and we loved that the spa was surrounded by waterfalls and a tropical jungle which made everything a very relaxing environment and perfect to go with your partner.

4. Belmond Casa Sierra Nevada, SMA

We love the Rosewood in San Miguel de Allende (see recent video on the Rosewood) but on our last visit we wanted to stay at a smaller boutique hotel type hotel, so we decided to try the Casa de Sierra Nevada. The Rosewood has a large pool area, so it tends to attract more families, while the Belmond seems to attract more couples. While at the Belmond we stayed in one of their beautiful "Deluxe Suites" which are perfect for a romantic getaway. We had our own heated pool, terrace and both rooms have beautiful fireplaces where we enjoyed by the fire with a glass of wine in the evening. However, what made Belmond's "Sierra Nevada House" really stand out was the quality of service. Eric, the general manager, and his team were always available to fulfill any request and were continually checking in to make sure we were 100% happy.

3. One&Only, Mandarina

The One&Only Mandarina is located just 90 minutes north of the Puerto Vallarta airport in the state of Nayarit. What makes this new hotel perfect for a romantic getaway is the fact that all rooms are self-contained villas or treehouses, so you are guaranteed total privacy. We stayed in an amazing Treehouse suite overlooking the ocean, which had a heated pool and incredible views of both the ocean and the jungle. The hotel has 2 private beaches, both of which you can swim to and there is also an adults only pool on top of a cliff with incredible views of the entire Mandarina. Mexico's most famous chef, Enrique Olvera (Pujol), also has a restaurant at the One&Only called Carao, which is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion.

2. Cala de Mar, Ixtapa

Cala de Mar is one of our favorite hotels in Mexico and is a great place for a romantic vacation. While the hotel is not adults-only, it certainly has that feel and we did not encounter any children during our stay. Because of its cliffside location, most families opt to stay in nearby Zihuatanejo, which has many family beaches (check out my video on Thompson Zihuatanejo). The 59 suites at Cala de Mar have spectacular views of the Pacific so there are no bad rooms. All suites also have large terraces with heated pools where you can enjoy the view. The hotel has four excellent restaurants where you can sample a variety of Mexican and international cuisine while listening to the waves crash on the rocks below. We also loved the two pool areas, which had a very relaxed atmosphere.

1. Hacienda de San Antonio, Colima

As I struggled to decide which hotels should be numbers 2 through 5, number 1 was an easy decision. When it comes to romantic getaways, nowhere like Hacienda San Antonio in Colima. The hacienda is owned by the multi-millionaire family of Sir James Goldsmith (who also owns Cuixmala) and was renovated and restored by the great French interior designer Robert Couturier over a 10-year period. Sometimes haciendas can usually feel more like museums than luxury hotels, but that's not the case at Hacienda San Antonio. The 25 suites have been individually decorated and have stunning views of the gardens and the Colima Volcanoes. The bar, billiards room, lounges, restaurants and pool area are beautifully designed and decorated.
While the Hacienda itself is wonderful, the reason I've given this the number 1 spot is because of the activities on offer to guests. You can take a romantic hot air balloon ride over the 25,000 acre estate, you can have a luxury picnic on their ranch or you can eat by a beautiful lake, just to name a few.
I could write a few thousand more words on the Hacienda de San Antonio but I still wouldn’t come close to doing it justice. If you want to know more, check out my YouTube video below and you can see for yourself why it deserves to be number 1.
